Place de la Bastille was named after the famous fortress-prison destroyed during the French Revolution of 1789.
Now this place can be called the center of the liberal movement of Paris. It is here that trade unions most often hold rallies and start demonstrations of left-wing political organizations. Since the times of the Paris Commune there is a tradition to organize public festivities on the Place de la Bastille. Various entertainment and sporting city events are often held here, for example, the weekly roller run, which is held every Sunday and everyone can take part in it. The attention of tourists on the square is attracted by a tall obelisk – the July Column.
It was established in honor of the revolution of 1830. At the top of the eighty-meter column is a gilded statue of the Genius of Freedom, holding in his right hand broken chains, and in the left – a torch. Other attractions of the square include the nearby Port Arsenal, a wharf that now serves as a mooring for yachts and pleasure boats, and the opera house.
The opening of the theater was timed to coincide with the bicentennial of the taking of the Bastille. The building is built in a modern architectural style.
