The history of champagne
Champagne is the region where the most famous sparkling wine is created. Local cellars store various wines and tourists can taste their favorite. But before you try champagne, you need to dive a little into the history and understand the peculiarities of this drink.
There have always been many legends and myths surrounding champagne. It is believed that Dom Perignon invented this festive drink and the famous province seems to have nothing to do with its origin.
Some lovers of sparkling wine think that this drink came to Russia in 1815 and they did not know anything about it before. They called it “fizz” and served it at imperial balls and receptions. Russians liked it so much that many poets and writers wrote about it in their works.
But the famous drink appeared much earlier. It was mentioned by Homer and later by Virgil. The ancient Romans cultivated vineyards on the territory of Champagne. But the wine produced was ordinary and there were no bubbles that everyone loved.
Later, the monks began to “brew” the fizz, but it did not age well and the barrels exploded. That’s when the Perignon brothers got into the game. They began bottling the wine and sealing it with cork bark plugs.
But the modern bottle design appeared in 1800. And it was created by the pharmacist François, who lived in the town of Chalon-en-Champagne.
The activities of the Perignons were continued by the widow Clicquot, who figured out how to store bottles so they wouldn’t explode.
