Located north of the French capital, Château de Chantilly was once the country’s largest aristocratic residence. Built at the beginning of the century by the Connetable (head of the army) of Montmorency, it later passed to the Princes of Condé. The romantic castle, surrounded by water and a beautiful park, combines Gothic and Baroque features. Its lush and airy forms are in harmony with its name – Chantilly, meaning whipped cream flavored with vanilla. By the way, Chantilly is the specialty dessert of the area, which every tourist can try. Inside the castle are hidden real “treasures” – paintings of great artists: Raphael, Van Dyck, Poussin, Botticelli, Delacroix and others. Notable objects are also the palace stables, which once numbered 249 horses and have now become a “living” equestrian museum. Not far from Chantilly is the town of Sanlis, almost every street of which is connected with some historical event. The spirit of antiquity is felt here very fully thanks to the fortress walls of the Gallo-Roman period surrounding the town, the ruins of the royal castle and the preserved palaces and villas of the 17th-18th century. Numerous sights of Sanlis beckon curious tourists: the Cathedral of Our Lady of Sanlis, the Chapel of St. Framburg, the Abbey of St. Vincent, the Bishop’s House, which now houses the Museum of Art.
