After Paris and Versailles, the Abbey of Mont Saint-Michel is the most popular place of pilgrimage for tourists in France, and for good reason. The impressive and majestic sight literally embodies the history of the Middle Ages. Attracts travelers also unique location of the sight – the island of Mont Saint-Michel is a relatively small rock, removed by 2 kilometers from the coast. But still the island is not completely impregnable – at low tide to the mainland stretches a strip of land, on which to the gate of the fortress can be reached on foot. Mont Saint-Michel is so striking that the creators of the movie “Lord of the Rings” designed the citadel of Minas Tirith in its likeness. The French affectionately call the famous structure the “Eighth Wonder of the World” and are proud that it is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The first chapel on the island appeared over a thousand years ago, but it wasn’t until the 16th century that the abbey took its final form. The fortress of Mont Saint-Michel has never been taken, although the island once held a siege for as long as 30 years.
