In a small town not far from Paris, there is the famous cemetery of St. Geneviève de Bois. More than 10 thousand former Russian citizens are buried there. For a long time in the cemetery buried officers of the White Army, but gradually there began to find the “last refuge” Russian emigrants who lived in the capital of France. Among them are many famous and recognized figures of Russian culture: Ivan Bunin, Rudolf Nureyev, Dmitry Merezhkovsky, Matilda Kshesinskaya, Nadezhda Teffi, Konstantin Somov, Alexei Remizov and others. To honor the memory of outstanding compatriots in Saint-Geneviève-de-Bois comes every year a large number of tourists from Russia. To honor the dead, a small Orthodox church was built in the cemetery. It was designed in the traditions of Novgorod churches of the XV-XVI centuries by Russian artist and architect Albert Benois. Together with his wife he executed the church frescoes. Both of them are buried in the crypt of this church. When in 2007 the lease of the land under the cemetery in St. Genevieve de Bois expired, the French raised the question of its demolition. But the Russian government allocated 700 thousand euros, extending the lease until 2040. We invite you to take a tour of St. Genevieve de Bois. Info – at this link.
